History
DRAGON PIZZA is a Mixture Rock Band from Shanghai with members XuQi (Guitar, Vocals), YU-KI (Bass, Vocals) and WangLei (Drums). Their sound is made up of various elements including PUNK, Alternative, Ska-Core, Nu-Metal, Hard-Core, Funk, Pop-Punk, Melo-Core, Metal-Core, Rap, Reggae, and Ethnic music.
Before changing its name, DRAGON PIZZA started in 2007 as the Hard-Core band “UNDERGROUND” with members ZhongZhong (Vocals now with Double Control Where), XuQi (Guitar, Vocals), ZhangXiao (Guitar now with THE MASHROOM), YU-KI (Bass), HuiPing (Drums now with Double Control Where). UNDERGROUND played a number of prominent shows in Shanghai including the MONSTERS ROCK ASIA show, support for the Shanghai stop of the REFLECTOR CHINA TOUR 2007, and the 35th NEW YEARS WORLD ROCK FESTIVAL with bands from China, Japan, America and Korea.
In 2008, ZhongZhong and HuiPing amicably decided to withdraw from the band. Drummer WangLei from the Hard-Core Shanghainese Band “LOUDSPEAKER” joined the band and helped morph the band’s sound to its mainstay of Mixture Rock. Soon after, the band improved rapidly and performed on the Shanghai leg of the BRAIN FAILURE CHINA TOUR 2008, played on the Jing An Temple stage for JAPAN FAIR 2008, and opened for the world famous band USELESS ID on the Shanghai stop of their China Tour.
In 2009, ZhangXiao left the band (now with THE MASHROOM) and the remaining members decided to push on as a 3-piece band. In July, the band planned and hosted “SHANGHAI NIGHT FEVER – 1st Stage” which attracted an audience of over 600. In November, the band participated in a huge cross-over music event between Taiwan and China called the MTV STYLE GALA 2009 and received much praise.
DRAGON PIZZA got its name from a pizza loaded with various different toppings. Each topping presents a different taste, but when eaten together, creates a new flavor on its own. People that come from different places, different cultures, speak different languages, have seen different things, and have felt different things come together here in Shanghai to create something new, just like the pizza with different toppings. DRAGON PIZZA feeds off of this atmosphere of new, striving to make music that will brighten up and bring fun to the dark world in which we live in.
DRAGON PIZZA is fascinating audiences all around China with their creative songs, lively dynamic and comedic stage presence. Media outlets like Japan FUJI Television and Shanghai SMG’s Channel Young have praised DRAGON PIZZA for their rare sound in an unexplored musical genre.
Look for DRAGON PIZZA to release its first album “Youth Liberation Ward” in 2010 in addition to going on the road for their first tour of China.
April 3rd, 2010, they performed at Shanghai's Yuyintang. According to Jake Newby: Dragon Pizza had kicked things off (at 9pm on the dot pretty much, due to the place being rammed) with a short but punchy set. It's been a while since I've seen them play, but I always enjoy seeing them - they're also great performers and always give a good show.[1]
