Maybe Mars is a new record label and production company dedicated to the innovative sound of young China. Supporting our bands and musicians fully in their production, recordings and performances in China and overseas.

--Maybe Mars website

Maybe Mars is run by Yang Haisong of PK14 and Michael Pettis of D-22. Since 2007, Zheng Changyu is on board.

About the label

Last year while big-name acts like Nine Inch Nails, New York Dolls and Cui Jian strutted across the stage in front of crowds of screaming fans at the 2007 Beijing Pop Festival, a newborn record label quietly released three albums from local Beijing indie bands. Since then, Maybe Mars Records has recorded 11 albums for bands that define indie music in China’s capital, seen some of them open on tour for internationally renowned groups like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and Blixa Bargeld’s Einsturzende Neubauten, helped them release albums in China and Australia, sign and record with British music giant Martin Atkins and work with Public Enemy drummer and musical director Brian Hardgroove. Not bad for a first-year anniversary. - China Music Radar[1]

The label was started as offspring of the D-22 in summer 2007.

Maybe Mars are like Factory Records (English record label credited with discovering The Happy Mondays and Joy Division, and the founding of The Hacienda in Manchester, birthplace of modern dance/electronic music). We have very informal relationships with the bands we endorse, helping them to record, distribute and perform. We think it's really important that we remain independent. - Zheng Changyu, manager of Maybe Mars[2]

In 2009, two sublabels of Maybe Mars started, Maybe Noise and Maybe Horse (马儿曲), with the first one concentrating on experimental music such as Hot and Cold or 10 and the later one focussing on Folk Rock with artists such as Laoda, Xiao He, Di Tu'ai and Traveller.

In February 2010, they started their showcase concert series entitled Independent China in Stereo, during which they sent numerous of their bands in cities all over the country.

In July 2010, rumours spread that Maybe Mars are going to release a number of highly rated records including one for Proximity Butterfly.[3]
