Man On The Moon

maybe this time you are here
mayby this time i am there
mayby next time we will be wrong
we are all late
maybe this time
maybe next time
nobody knows
i wanna go down the line
i wanna go down the road
i wanna go down the line to find where in the world you are crying
i wanna go down the line to find you

maybe this time you are alone
maybe this time i am alone
maybe next time we all are wrong
we'll be late

i wanna go down the line
i wanna go down the road
i wanna go down the line to find where on the planet you are crying
i wanna go down the line to find you

i will see you again in another day
i will see you again in another town
i will see you again in another hotel room

i wanna go down the line
i wanna go down the road
i wanna go down the line to find where on the moon you are crying
i wanna go down the line to find you

Love Is Pop

love is pop
love is a party
we join it everyday

love is a room
love is a hotel
we are outside every night

we have a fast dream
we have got a terrible life
we have a horror travel in it

when you leave the room
the pink elephant comes
when you leave the car
the rozd comes to the end
when you leave the bed
the night becomes darkness
when you leave the room
the light comes to be starduse

love is a hit
love is a drunk
we dance with it every time
love is pop
love is a hotel
we are outside every night

we have a fast dream
we have got a terrible life
we have a horror travel with you

love is pop
love is a party
love is a room
love is a hit

Bursting out of the gate with pounding baselines and dizzying synthesizer loops, Queen Sea Big Shark’s whirling dervish of a debut album from Modern Sky has finally hit stores. Despite numerous delays, the album lives up to and often surpasses their notoriously frenzied live shows. Now audiences can take the madness home and bless their neighbors with 14 tracks of infectious surf pop. The only thing missing is rock queen Fu Han tearing around your living room in a fit of euphonic ecstasy.

Although Queen Sea Big Shark have wowed crowds in Beijing and across China for nearly two years, this recording finally delivers their full sonic punch. Hard-driving concert favorites like Hard Heart and Dirty Mind maintain their uncompromising ferocity. More importantly, Fu Han’s singing prowess finally shines forth in a studio setting and should silence some of her more clamorous detractors. The captivating vocals on Man on the Moon provide a gentle but bewitching segue between more energetic sections of the album.

In the long run, it seems that the extra time spent on the recording paid off – the clean acoustics and skillful transitions speak to guitarist Cao Pu and drummer Xiao Wu’s production skills – although there are a few missteps. The album loses some of its steam with the extended rendition of Hello! Passengers, and the overall lyrical content isn’t fully satisfying (though I remain on the fence when it comes to English vocal crossovers by Chinese bands). This self-titled debut will nonetheless be a welcome addition to any rocker’s CD collection; it’s an album that will be hard to follow. In the meantime, look forward to more riotous shows across dirty ol’ Beijing.

Queen Sea Big Shark’s vocalist Fu Han sings like she’s biting down on a plank of wood – a female Jonathan Richman without the underlying menace. She has no range whatsoever but, thankfully, seems aware of this fact and makes the best with what she has. Now, if only the rest of the band or this album were that consistent.

后海大鲨鱼 consists of half of a very good album and half of the worst Now That’s What I Call Crap compilation ever. The good half – the half where QSBS stick to the rollicking, undemanding surf-pop that makes their live shows such a gas – is bursting full of energy and good time, hipshaking, tunes. ‘Kiss! Kill! Bang!’ with its funky organs and punchy vocal stabs is an instant alarm call classic and ‘No! No! No!’ sounds like the Cramps with ambition (Fu Han’s voice rendering ‘dangerous’ as ‘ginger’ – lending the song a little extra bite). Where it’s good, this album sounds like The Shadows, Dick Dale and The B52s all given a crash course in Chinglish and mini-skirted sass.

When it’s bad, though, it’s really bloody bad. QSBS seem to have got bored with the twang halfway through recording and decided to dabble in other forms – a mistake; Terrible sore-thumb ballad ‘Man On The Moon’ sounds like it was recorded in a sock; ‘Lady Sisters’ is a terribly ill-advised exercise in synth-pop that could have been a Material Girl-era Madonna b-side. It’s doubtful that Channel-V is holding a spot open for QSBS, but they have a stab at heavy rotation glory with ‘Hello, Passengers’ nonetheless. Many of these songs would perhaps work but for the curse of Modern Sky; incredibly heavy-handed production that bludgeons the character out of all but the most hardy songs. That said, with some very careful sequencing there’s a very good EP in here somewhere.

Clocking in at just over 47 minutes, the S/T debut (Badhead/Modern Sky) from Beijing's Queen Sea Big Shark is a 14-track gem that, from start to finish, showcases their signature surf-punk dance-rock sound, demonstrating why they are one of the most infectious bands in the Middle Kingdom.

Often compared to New York alternative, art-rockers The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (an assessment that guitarist Cao Pu refers to as "bullshit," claiming that, "those who never give up this issue don't listen to a lot of music."), QSBS has clearly carved out their niche with a handful of three-and-a-half minute numbers featuring Cao's classic, razor-sharp (Fender) Twin Reverb tone, drummer Xiao Wu's heavy-steady rhythms, and, of course, the ferocious, attitude-laden drawl of riot girl/front woman Fu Han.

Standout tracks "Hard Heart," "No! No! No!," "Hold Your Hand," and "Dirty Mind" perfectly encapsulate the carefree, dancey-swingy-bop that QSBS has become (relatively) well-known for, but S/T also captures the band delving out into unknown territories with the ballad "Man On the Moon" and the electronic-drum laced "Lady Sisters."

"We are not meant to stick to some kind of style," explains Cao, who along with Xiao popped their production cherries after several failed attempts at collaborating with more experienced knob-turners. "Expressing emotion in the song is the best . . . we are also willing to try something new."

In an effort to promote and push the album, QSBS is currently in the middle of a five-week national tour which they describe as "taking a fantastic trip by Galaxy Express 9999." Whatever that means (it could just be a translation problem), this brief quote does expose the main weakness of S/T, namely the lyrics. Sure, allowances can be made given that English is not Fu's first language (she writes all the words), but lines like "don't you cry betty boom," "joan jett sings the stars for her," and "you're such a shit girl / what does the twenty one century youths against," are just, well, lazy and sophomoric.

Vernacular aside, the current tour (which began three months after the December 2007 release) has been an overall success for the QSBS camp.

"While we are performing on the stage, there are a lot of audience [members] singing with us, which has never happened before," affirms Cao. "Furthermore, those audiences from the other cities seem quite familiar with us."

We told you the other week about the CD shop down at Yu Yin Tang now being open and a quick scan of the shelves (well, shelf) tells us we're going to be in there a lot. The shop's size reflects the size of the independent music scene in China but it's quality not quantity that counts and you can find pretty much all the main releases that have come out from the bands at the forefront of Chinese rock in the past few years — saving you from trawling the internet for them or waiting for those bands to tour. Records from Carsick Cars, Hedgehog, Snapline, Cold Fairyland, and the new one from The Honeys were all there along with Beijing Midi festival and PK14 DVDs amongst others.

It was in this corner of YYT that Shanghaiist finally got our grubby little hands on 后海大鲨鱼 (QueenSea Big Shark)'s self-titled long player. We've had a few demos on our iTunes for months and have been eagerly awaiting their first full-length studio album. On first listen, it seems that it was definitely worth the wait.

The opening track Lightening Metropolis, with its driving beat and throbbing guitars, sets the scene nicely for the rest of the record and its 3 minute-ish slices of jump-along disco-rock. Sounding at times like Modern Sky label-mates 新裤子 (New Pants) at the top of their game, QSBS fuse dance-like beats with funked up bass and guitars for a sound not unlike New York's Radio 4. The vocals of lead singer 傅菡 (Fu Han) meanwhile, drip with attitude in a style that, while distinctly her own, has echoes of Le Tigre or The Gossip on stand out tracks like Dirty Mind or No!No!No!

It's rumoured that the band were dissatisfied with the original production on the album, claiming it made them sound too much like a pop group, and that the record ultimately had to be remixed to bring back a rockier tone. While there are a few tracks where QSBS come close to an 80's disco sound, generally the album retains a certain edginess throughout. In addition to more polished tracks like the excellent Lady Sisters and Kiss! Kill! Bang! — where the band reach their most electro-poppy — there are also several unadulterated rock numbers, like the outstanding Get Away and Money F**ker, with bursts of crashing guitars and fast-paced hooks.

Overall, this is probably the most fun rock record from a Chinese band since last year's excellent Noise Hit World by fellow Beijingers Hedgehog, and it should help QSBS cement their reputation as one of the bands to watch in China — something you can do quite literally when they come to Shanghai this weekend.
