The lead singer for Queen Sea Big Shark swivels on stage in a spectacularly mirrored dress that makes her look like a cross between a mermaid and a disco ball. Obviously a little drunk, she turns languidly to her guitarist, nods at him, and then suddenly the whole band blasts out in a perfectly synchronized explosion of guitar buzz and backbeat. The singer smiles nastily and then throws herself into a frenzied dance while chanting out snatches of barely intelligible words. Within seconds the audience in front of the stage erupts in a frenzy of dancing.
Queen Sea Big Shark was formed in 2005 and almost from the very beginning became one of the most watched bands in the Beijing scene and one of the most admired among the younger bands. They have a hard, very funky but also very hard-rocking sound that in some ways recreates the New York scene of the early 1980s. Like bands of that time and period – Bush Tetras, the Contortions, ESG – the Sharks combine tight rhythms with very loud, raunchy guitars.
Their name derives from a small signboard they found in Beijing:
One day we walked around Queensea Lake in Beijing, we saw a sign writes "This is mine, don't even touch it, I'm queen sea big shark," then we thought, "Wow! That's cool. Let's take it."[1]
Musically among the most sophisticated bands in Beijing, Queen Sea Big Shark are immensely focused in both their song writing and their performances. Their stage act displays a ferocious discipline that consists of Cao Pu’s guitar (one of the best guitarists in Beijing) backed by an incredibly tight rhythm section. All of this control anchors the band in a way that throws singer Fu Han’s out-of-control gyrations and frantic singing into sharp relief. Fu Han’s spectacular stage presence is at the heart of the band’s power and makes their live act one of the best in China, and it doesn’t seem to matter to their stage show whether the audience consists of hundreds of screaming fans or a few friends.

History
2004
In May 2004, the band P.K. 14 inspired several young Beijingers to form a band, which played mostly punk and grunge music. Later they change their style to dance rock and perform under a different name in June the first time. Three months later they record their own song, however they drop their name and their drummer leaves, for which only in November a replacement could be found.
2005
On April 28th, 2005, they perform live at the 13 Club, during which concert two songs (Ladysister & Orangeshow) were recorded in the compilation For The Love Of Rock. On April 30th, they performed at the What bar, stating that this was their first official live concert. May 3rd they performed at the 紫羅蘭 bar. May 4ht they performed at the Nameless Highland during the 中華朋克網五周年記念 event. July 9th they performed at the Nameless Highland. July 23rd they rocked the 13 Club. July 29th, they performed at the Nameless Highland. September 10th and October 1st they rocked the 13 Club. Further in October, the bands Snapline, Carsick Cars, The Naza and Queensea Big Shark produce the compilation record No Beijing. NO BEIJING is a collection of bands around Beijing that share a similar aesthetic with New York city's short lived No Wave. October 15th, they performed with Snapline and Carsick Cars in the 2 Kolegas for the No Beijing tour. October 21st they rocked Hangzhou's No. 31 bar. On the 22nd, they performed in Shanghai's Live Bar. Further in October, their song Ladysister was included in the issue vol. 303 of TongSuGeQu. October 29th, they performed in the China 伝媒 University. November 11th, they performed in the Nameless Highland as support act for Japanese punk band The Savas. November 25th, they performed in the Nameless Highland as support for the 1st EP release of Re-TROS. December 18th, they rocked the Yugong Yishan. December 23rd, they performed at the Nameless Highland. Later that month, Queen Sea Big Shark recorded 5 demo songs, which were released online. The song nonono had been downloaded over 10000 times throughout several months.
2006
Sometime in 2006, they recorded and released their demo Hard Heart.
On April 21st, 2006, they performed at the Nameless Highland. April 22nd, they performed at the 13 Club. May 1st, they performed at the 13 Club. May 4th, they rocked the Nameless Highland. May 9th, they performed during the event Remembering 20 years of rock Yi Wu Suo You (1986-2006) at the New Get Lucky Bar in Beijing. May 20th, they performed during the 向JOY DIVISION致敬 event at the Nameless Highland. May 27th they performed another 20 years ... event at the New Get Lucky bar. Further in May, their song Hard Heart was included in the So Rock Magazine no. 52. June 10th, they performed in Dalian's Exhibition Square Building 4. June 17th, they rocked Shenyang's 記念中国揺滾20年 festival (Remembering 20 years of rock). July 14th, they performed at the Nameless Highland. July 27th, they rocked in the Starlive. August 5th, they performed at the Nameless Highland. September 10th, they performed during the event 2006 西部力量戸外揺滾音楽節 at Chengdu. September 28th, they performed at the 2 Kolegas. September 29th, they performed at the D-22. October 2nd, they rocked at Guangzhou and on the 4th, they joined the 首届中国（増城）揺滾&[口卑]酒狂歓節曁第五届新塘国際牛仔服装節 festival in Guangzhou. October 13th, they performed at the D-22. Further in October their song Hold your hand was included in the 2006.10 issue of the magazine 音楽時空. October 29th, they performed at the U-Club in Shanghai during the 群英会・2006天津原創音楽季 event. November 24th, they rocked the Nameless Highland as support band for Norway punkers Haggis. December 7th they performed in the Starlive as support for Maximo Park. December 23rd they performed at the D-22. On December 30th they rocked the Nameless Highland. Further in December they signed a contract with the Badhead division of Modern Sky.
2007
On January 6th, 2007, they performed in the Nameless Highland during the 拯救革命同志全国連合義演 festival. April 29th, they rocked the D-22. May 1st, they performed during the Midi Music Festival 2007. May 25th, they performed in the 4 Live bar in Shanghai. May 29th, they hold a release party for their first record Queen Sea Big Shark at the Star Live in Beijing, however the record was not immediatelly released. After the show they started a tour through China: June 2nd, they hold a concert at the Live Show bar in Xi'an. June 8th, Changsha. June 9th, Wuhan (Vox Bar). June 14th in Guiyang. June 16th, in Chengdu's Little Bar. June 17th, Chongqing, the last station of their tour. June 23rd they performed at the Yugong Yishan. August 11th, they rocked the D-22. September 10th, they performed at the Mao Live together with Mando Diao and The Sunshine. October 4th, they performed during the Modern Sky Festival 2007. October 5th, they performed in the D-22. October 13th, they performed at the Yugong Yishan as support for Joyside's record release of BOOZE AT NEPTUNE'S DAWN. November 2nd, 18th, December 14th and 24th they rocked in the Mao Live. December 26th they performed during the 明日的栄耀 摩登十年星光夜--後北京新声之夜 event in Beijing's Starlive. Then finally their 1st record is officially released and hold a second release party for their CD in the Mao Live on December 31st.
2008
2008, In February their song Man on the Moon is included in X-Music Magazine no. 359. March 7th, they performed live at the Yugong Yishan in Beijing. March 8th, they performed at the Star Live. March 13th, they performed at the D-22. On March 14th, they performed in Shijiazhuang, starting their tour through China until the end of April.. March 15th, they performed in Xi'an at the 月亮鑰匙 bar, March 21st in Chongqing at the 堅果倶楽部, March 22nd in Chengdu's Little Bar. March 29th, they performed at Kunming's 老窩 bar. April 1st, they performed in Nanjing, April 5th, they performed in Guangzhou's 191SPACE. April 11th, they performed at Changsha, April 12th in Wuhan's VOX bar. April 17th they performed in Nanjing, 18th in Shanghai (the Rock, Paper, Disco! event) and 20th in Hangzhou. Shortly before their Shanghai gig, QSBS were introduced by Smart Shanghai to the Shanghai audience and asked about their debut album, Cao responsed:
"We are not meant to stick to some kind of style, (...) Expressing emotion in the song is the best . . . we are also willing to try something new." - Cao[2]
May 1st they had returned to Beijing, rocking the D-22. May 2nd, they rocked in SiChuan's capital Chengdu during the 2008橘子音楽節 festival. The day after, May 3rd, they hosted a show at the Jah Bar. May 23rd and May 31st they performed at the Mao Live in Beijing. July 7th, they went to Taiwan to perform during the 第九届貢寮海洋音楽祭 festival. July 31st they started their 愛噪音 (Love Noise) tour, sponsored by Converse, together with P.K. 14 in Nanjing and went afterwards to Hangzhou (Aug 2nd), Changsha (Aug 6th), Wuhan (7th) and Xi'an (9th), where they ended their short tour. September 30th, they performed during the Modern Sky Festival 2008 at the Haidian Park in Beijing. December 27th, they performed at the China Art Academy in Hangzhou. December 29th, they joined the DVD release party at the Star Live in Beijing for the 2007 Midi Music Festival DVD.
2009
On April 11th, 2009, they performed at the Mao Live in Beijing. In May 2009, their singer Fu Han is voted the no. 3 coolest rock star in Beijing by Timeout Beijing Magazine. No girl on the Beijing scene exudes rock star quite like Fu Han. She turns Queen Sea Big Shark gigs into frenzied riots with her electric gyrations, endless pouting and sheer charisma. [3] July 19th, they performed in the Yugong Yishan in Beijing. August 8th 2009, they performed during the InMusic Festival 2009 on the Zhangbei Grasslands on the Main Stage.
In September (5th - 27th) they toured the USA during the Sing For China Tour 2009 organized by Modern Sky Records. September 11th, they rocked the Artistery in Portland, Oregon. According to commentor Alex: Houhai Sharks were okay, but looked a little tire.[4]
2010
In the February 2010 issue of TimeOut Beijing, Shen Lihui named them as one of the top acts in 2010.[5] On May 1st, they performed at the Strawberry Music Festival 2010. According to Beijing Daze: Queen Sea Big Shark was the revelation of the day and pulled no doubt the biggest audience! They delivered an amazing performance with great sound, theatrics, feelings and had a lot of charisma! I’m pleasantly surprised and found myself dancing and jumping around during their set more than any other act that day.[6] According to Beijing Gig Guide: Fu Han was dressed in a silver bodysuit, which looked unbearably hot in the sunlight and stage lighting, though she changed into a much more familiar leotard after a couple of songs. They were fun and high energy as always, and compelled people to dance even from hilltops hundreds of meters away.[7] On May 9th, they performed in VIetnam at the CAMA Festival 2010 at the American Club in 19 Hai Ba Trung St, Hanoi. According to Rock Passion: Queen Sea Big Shark from China was the last band performing in CAMA festival. They impressed the audiences with their own indie rock. And their performance also ended the festival.[8] On July 16th, 2010, they performed at the Qingyuan Niu Yu Zui Festival 2010. December 27th, they won the title of Show of the Year for their gig at Mao Livehouse, November 5th 2010, awarded at the 2010 Shanghai Grammys by the Cityweekend Shanghai.[9]
