History

Voodoo Kungfu (also called "Zerone") was born out ot the ashes of the former band called Mastrubation. The main soul of the band Vocalist Li Nan studied at the Irish Catholic School, but his uproarish spirit of rock'n'roll and his "God is made in Flesh and Blood" led him to turn into the christian extreme sect called Jesus Christ Holy Priest Community and got kick out of the school.

After his return in China in 2000, Li Nan found his own band called Mastrubation paying much attention on religious stuff. After struggling with different line ups which broke often apart because of musicial and religious conflicts the band came to an dead end in the beginning of 2003 where Li Nan suddenly disappeared mysteriously.

When he showed up again, he brought up an even more mysterious person into view, Chao LuoMeng from the inner mongolian Province who showed his amazing skills on the mongolic folk stringed instrument, the Horsehead Cello, but he is also an successor of the ancient mongolic Religion Shamanism. The common hatred to mainstream religions brought him and Li Nan together on Li Nan's mysterious visit in Inner Mongolia.

On the second half of 2003 they went to Tibet 3 times where Li Nan studied many mysterious pagan religions. After their return Vocalist Li Nan renamed the band into Voodoo Kungfu and added many religious and mysterious eastern asian folklore aspects into the music spheres.

Until 2004 a new steady line up was set adding the Chefeditor of Sohu.com's Ringtone Channel Hai Feng on the guitars. The new line-up breed a fresh wind into the bands activities, but not for long soon after Li Nan disappeared once again and return after spring fest of 2005 as an even more mysterious skinheaded iconic figure.

A new Bass Player was added into the band before Voodoo Kungfu went on stage for the first time in May 2005. With the mystical sound of mongolian folklore over the Horsehead Cello and the high pitched yelling of Li Nan whos corpus was written full of signs and symbols, ZERONE turned the club stage into a altar celebrating gods and demons long forgotten in this modern place of an ancient nation. Their music combined doom, sludge, noise, grind, folk and dark, hatefull and emotional music. It is very difficualt to label this unique band into any know genre, one have to see there breath-taking live performance to get a clear impression.

In October 2005, they performed during the Midi Music Festival 2005.

December 2006 Voodoo Kongfu won the 2nd price of the "worlds battle of bands" in Hongkong!

2007

On May 2nd, 2007, they performed in the 13 Club. On May 25th they rocked the 13 Club. On June 23rd, they performed in the Get Lucky Bar. On June 24th, they performed in the Mao Live. July 14th, they rocked Shanghai's 4Live. July 21st, they performed at 世貿天階文化広場. July 27th, they performed at the Tribute to Testament concert in the Starlive. August 4th, they performed at the 13 Club. August 11th, they performed in Jinan during the 2007第三届中国（国際）吉它文化節 festival. On August 18th, they performed at the Get Lucky Bar. On September 15th, they rocked the Starlive. October 2nd they performed at the 13 Club during the 2nd 13 Club Metal Festival. October 3rd, they performed at the Modern Sky Festival 2007 in the Haidian Park. November 9th, they rocked the Yugong Yishan. December 14th, they performed at the 13 Club. December 29th, they rocked the Live Bar in Shanghai.

2008

On January 1st, 2008, they performed in the Haidian Exhibition hall during the presentation party of Reflector's record 成长瞬间. March 29th, they performed in Tianjin's 13 Club. May 23rd, they rocked the New Get Lucky during a charity concert for the victims of the SiChuan Earthquake. June 27th, Voodoo Kongfu won the Metal Battle 2008 at the 13 Club as best chinese metal band, qualifying them thereby to perform during the Wacken Open Air 2008 in Germany. July 25th, they performed during the 失去的青春 - 五道口大表的結婚Party Show at the 13 Club. On July 31st, they participated at the Wacken Open Air 2008, the largest metal festival, taking place in Germany. August 14th, they performed in the Starlive during the 中国現代音楽周 event. September 20th, they performed in Xi'ans 日落之前 bar. September 28th, they performed in the Third Metal Festival at the 13 Club. In October their first record Voodoo Kungfu is released. October 1st, they performed at the Midi Music Festival 2008 and on October 2nd they performed at the Modern Sky Festival 2008. October 17th, they rocked the Live bar in Shanghai. October 18th, they performed in Nanjing's 古堡 bar. October 19th, they performed in Hangzhou's 旅行者 bar. October 25th, they performed in Nanchang's 黒鉄 bar. October 26th, they rocked Wuhan's VOX bar. October 27th, they performed in Changsha's 肆陸 bar. October 30th, they performed in Guangzhou's 191 Space. 2009

On April 9th, 2009, they performed in Dalian's 酒窩 bar. On April 11th, they rocked Changchun's 蘇唐 bar. On April 12th, they performed in Shenyang's 福.LOFT. May 16th, they performed in Shanghai's Yuyintang. June 20th, they rocked Nanchang's 黒鉄 bar. June 26th, thy performed in Guangzhou's 191 Space. Lineup at that time 李楠（Vo）, 趙峰（G）, 劉睿（B）, 陳海鷹（Dr） and 那仁満達（馬頭琴）. June 28th, they performed in Shenzhen's 根拠地 bar. In July their song 毀了 was included in the compilation record Anima Apocalypse 1 (VA). September 11th, they performed in Chongqing's 堅果倶楽部. December 11th, they rocked the Mao Live House. December 12th, they performed in Tianjin's 揺滾天津倶楽部. December 26th, they rocked the Mao.

2010

In January, 張天然 (Hell Savior) joined as guitarist.

April 25th, 2010, shouter Li Nan is interviewed by the Cityweekend Beijing. Asked about the style of their music, Li Nan replied:

“We don’t really call our music ‘metal’,” says Li Nan, “I call it new age war music, or maybe ‘dark age’. Yes, we are making music for a dark age.” - Li Nan^[1]

On May 2nd, they performed at the Midi Music Festival 2010. According to Beijing Daze: (...) one hell of a performance by Voodoo Kungfu that had the crowd raising up a dust storm in front of the stage! I’m liking them more and more and they’re truly one of the most original acts out of China. The blend of mongolian folk, throat singing and death metal meshes together in beautiful screeching harmony!^[2] Further in May, Li Nan is interviewed by MTV Iggy. Asked "Your concert, and the way your fans react to you, felt like a religious experience in its own right. Do you see it that way?" he responded:

Ahhh…maybe? Religion in China is really terrible. I mean Chinese people, they don’t believe in anything. Maybe they need something to believe in. And maybe they found something through me — about religion. I don’t want the audience to believe in me like a religion. I mean I’m not God, I’m just a rock singer.^[3]

2011

Supposed new record cover 2011

In March, news leaked about a new record of Voodoo Kungfu entitled Dark World Music to be released April 23rd 2011.^[4] On May 1st, they performed at the Beijing Midi Music Festival 2011. According to Beijing Daze:

Voodoo Kungfu, whom I had seen the week before, was scheduled to close the night. unfortunately, they only got to play 3 songs before they were told they had to stop due to time constraints. I really feel bad for them as the 3 songs they played sounded so much more inspired and better than their performance at the starlive. It was loud, theatrical and in-your-face.^[5]

2012

On February 7th 2012, Li Nan announced via Weibo that Voodoo Kungfu will break up as he will go to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music.^[6]

On May 27th, Voodoo Kungfu had their final concert, celebrating the farewell of Li Nan. According to Beijingdaze:

To say Mao Live was packed would be an understatement… it was a death-pit and a catastrophy waiting to happen but no one cared! The 600+ faithful that gathered to pay their tribute to one of the most charismatic figures and entities that graced the Yaogun Scene. The place was covered in small chunks of paper carrying calligraphy. Those were hanging on the ceilings, on the instruments, thrown on the stage, into the audience etc… The place was packed by 8:30 even though the band didn’t start until much after 9:30.. it didn’t matter, it was the calm before the storm! If the audience was possessed, you can try imagining how the band was: They were tense, intense, playing with a determination and purpose that was lacking from their previous show! Li Na matched every concert goers in intensity and raised them ten-fold. He prowled the stage growling, screeching, screaming and singing like only he can. Shenzi Jun 申子俊, the drummer, reached deep within like i’ve never seen him do before! He carried his emotions through his drumsticks and boy did they come out loud. Nico, on bass, looked like he was using whatever strength he could still muster to control his emotion whereas Xiaoliang 李晓亮, the newest addition to the band, couldn’t help falling to his emotions.^[7]
